Access to time shift folder denied.

Post by BartZorn » Sat Feb 11, 2017 10:22 am

Hello,

I (think I) have configured every thing OK, and it works.

However, every now and then I get the following error in Recorder.Card-2.log:

2017-02-10 13:51:02.6161 [Error][9]: REST POST /Streams/Live/Start
error:
System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path 'R:\Temp' is denied.
at ArgusTV.Common.StaThreadSyncronizer.StaSynchronizationContext.Send(SendOrPostCallback d, Object state)
at ArgusTV.Recorder.Card.CardService.StartLiveStream(Service service, Satellite satellite, LiveStreamMode mode, String timeshiftFolder, CardLiveStream& cardStream)
at ArgusTV.Recorder.CardHost.ServiceImplementation.CardHostModule.<StreamRoutes>b__29(Object p)
at CallSite.Target(Closure , CallSite , Func`2 , Object )
at Nancy.Routing.Route.<>c__DisplayClass4.<Wrap>b__3(Object parameters, CancellationToken context)

I have configured R:\Temp as time shift folder. R: is a RAM disk of 4 GB. The Temp folder gets a Everyone:full control protection at system startup, and that does not change afterwards.

What can deny access then?

TIA,

Bart

Strange thing is that the files are created without problem in the time shift folder. Only after about 90 minutes of TV viewing, the problem occurs. Kodi freezes and after a while returns to its menu, at which point Argus deletes all files in the time shift buffer.

I thought it might have to do with insufficient space for time shifting, but that does not seem to be the case.

I reduced the size of the files to be used for time shifting, but that did not help.
I put the time shifting folder on a disk with (more than) sufficient space, and created a lot of big files. That did not help either. In fact, the problem occurred after only 10 minutes of TV watching.

I attach the log files from the last case here.

Any errors in windows log files?

Did you try to test with a script that frequently writes files and see if that also fails?

Seems to be more a windows related issue vs a argus issue

I could not find anything in Event viewer which could give an indication.

I am currently running DVBlink, which also uses the same RAM disk for time shifting. I have problems with DVBlink (that is why I am experimenting with Argus!), but it can run without problems for many hours. I suppose that, once I have paused the program for a few minutes and then continue, there is a lot of both read and write activity on the time shift buffer.

I take it that my log files do not give you reason to suspect something? Is it possible to translate the errors that are there to something more understandable for someone like me?

Thanks for your response!

Strange. I am now running one channel without interruption for more than 4 hours.
This with the limited time shift buffer of 3 files of 1200 MB on the RAM disk.

Probably tonight, when we are watching a movie, it will stop again at the most crucial moment.

Well, that did not happen. What did happen is that Kodi freezes for a short time, displaying the circle with the buffering percentage and then continues. Plus, I have seen one occurrence that Kodi freezed completely and had to be killed with Task Manager.

Anyway, Argus works better than DVBlink, and it is MUCH cheaper!

Did you try to locate the files on a non-RAM disk to exclude any ram disk issues?

It is not entirely clear to me what you mean.

I have tried to move the time shift folder to my 2.7 TB disk which also holds my video and music library. For some reason, that did not work at all. Next I moved back to the RAM disk and made sure that the number and size of files fits on it (4 GB RAM disk, 3 * 1.2 GB time shift files).

Since then, I have had a few hiccups and freezes of Kodi, but I don't know where the problem is located. I will try to isolate the events to get a better view of what is going on.

That is what I meant. The move to the 2.7Tb drive.

OK, I suppose I (partially) answered your question.

Like I said, it did not work. Because I was under pressure from an other household member, who wanted to see a particular show, I quickly reverted to using the RAM disk, which at least partially works.

To proceed, I have a few questions:

- Can I expect better time shifting performance from a RAM disk, or is a conventional disk fast enough?
- I suppose each tuner needs its own time shift space. How much space should I make available? Is there an architectural maximum? I am considering adding a mini-PCIe based SSD to my system, which would be a lot cheaper than adding RAM. Would that be a good idea?

Thanks in advance!
